About Us

Renee has a passion for both the water environment and community education.  Having 10 years experience in the aquatic field, Renee has a Bach of Applied Science Honours degree in Environmental Science, which lead to a career in Environmental Research, primarily in aquatic sampling and macro invertebrate identification.

Her early passion began in her schooling days after becoming involved with the local Waterwatch group and along with fellow students completed a project looking at the health of waterways around the area of Cobram.  The participation in this project lead to an exchange to America where she was able to participate in aquatic sampling with her counterparts and see their way of sampling in another country throughout the time of the exchange.

Renee has had a long time passion to share the wonders of waterbugs and how they can help identify the health of a river and hopes that through Waterbug Detectives can share this passion to engage our future budding scientists.

"Thank you so much for the terrific Water Bug Detective session.  Our kinder children were thoroughly engaged and thrilled to discover so many water bugs. Incidentally, the session was also an awesome fine motor activity."

    Ellen, Birralee Preschool, Finley

“We booked in a session for our OSHC Program during the school holidays. During the holidays we have a very broad age range (3-12 years old). Each and every child remained engaged for the duration of the session! The children enjoyed being mini scientists and exploring their world through this fun and interactive session.  Us educators were even engrossed in the session, helping the children to search through the water to find a range of bugs. We will definitely be booking in another Waterbug Detectives incursion with Renee in the near future for our Preschool children. Thanks Renee for a wonderful learning experience!”

Kelsey, Kindergarten Teacher, Eilleen Taylor Kindergarten

"The children really enjoyed the workshop and loved the hands on experience.  It is something different and the children loved to put the lab coats on, with the glasses and get to use special equipment."

    FAQ

    Additional Information

    Where are you based?

We are based in North East Victoria, near Yarrawonga.  We can service centers both regionally in Victoria and southern New South Wales. Our sessions come to you.

Why is there a travel fee attached?

We try to keep our prices as low as possible to ensure that even the smallest kinder groups get the opportunity to experience some waterbug fun! The travel fee covers our travel costs due to most centers being located out of town.

Is the activity suitable to boys and girls?

YES! We want all children to experience the joy in science and hope to spark an interest to our future budding scientists.

What happens if a child loses interest?

We do our best to engage every child.  Should some start to lose interest we have some coloring sheets and puzzles to entertain them whilst the rest of the group completes the activity.

What age group does the incursion suit?

We cater for Kindergarten/Preschool groups (ages 4-5), as well as Foundation Primary years (Years Prep - Grade 1)

How long does the session run for?

The workshop runs for approximately 60 minutes.

We arrive 20-30 minutes prior to the session start time to set up (depending on student numbers).  We bring everything required.

What sort of space is required to set up?

The session starts off on the mat where we give an educational talk, followed by the live sorting of waterbug samples. This is best set up on tables, being mindful that the space may get a little wet.  We clean away and wipe down the tables on conclusion of the workshop.

Can you run from a Bush Kinder setting?

Yes we can, this can be discussed further as each setting is different.

Do you have Public Liability Insurance?

    Yes we do.

Do you have a Working with Children's Check?

    Yes we do.

    Covid-19 Safe Plan

We aim to deliver our workshop following current Covid safe guidelines.  We will check-in on arrival, sanitize, and wear a mask where required.

In a Bush Kinder setting we ask that the kinder teacher in charge check-in to our QR code on display.

Should we have symptoms on the day of the workshop, the current booking will be postponed, or refunded due to availability.

We are double vaxed, and will show proof on arrival.
